About Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park, covering approximately 3,230 square kilometers. It is conveniently located about 300 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, making it the most accessible southern park from the city. Established in 1964 and expanded in 1975, Mikumi is nestled among scenic mountain ranges including the Uluguru Mountains to the east and the Rubeho and Malundwe Mountains surrounding other parts of the park.

Why Visit Mikumi with Angulya Tours and Travel?

  • Rich Wildlife: Often called the “Little Serengeti,” Mikumi hosts a wide variety of wildlife including large herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, lions, leopards, and hyenas. It is also home to rare species such as sable antelopes, African wild dogs, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. The park is notable for its high chances of spotting tree-climbing lions, a phenomenon more commonly associated with Lake Manyara.
  • Diverse Ecosystems: The park is divided by the Tanzam Highway into two distinct ecosystems. The northwest “Mkata plains” resemble the Serengeti with open grasslands and iconic baobab trees, while the southeast features denser shrubland and miombo woodlands. The Great Ruaha River and seasonal floodplains provide essential water sources for wildlife.
  • Birdwatching Paradise: Mikumi boasts over 400 bird species, including secretary birds, bateleur eagles, black-bellied bustards, and oxpeckers, making it a top destination for bird enthusiasts.
  • Scenic Beauty and Hiking: Surrounded by mountains and hills, the park offers spectacular sunrise and sunset views, especially from vantage points like the Uluguru and Malundwe Mountains. Hiking opportunities abound for those who love nature and photography.
  • Less Crowded: Mikumi offers a more tranquil safari experience compared to northern parks, allowing for intimate wildlife encounters and peaceful game drives.

Accessibility
Mikumi is easily accessible from Dar es Salaam via a 4-5 hour drive along the Dar es Salaam-Mbeya highway or by air to nearby airstrips, making it an excellent option for travelers looking to explore southern Tanzania’s wilderness.
